GatorLUG Meeting Agenda for July 19, 2006

6:15 - 6:45 Distro Spotlight - Dapper Drake, Ben Preston, Eldo Varghase

6:45 - 7:20 Presentation - Monitor Everything with Nagios, Martin Smith
Martin B. Smith joined the Bureau of Economic and Business Research in 2006 after completing a Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science at the University of Florida. As part of the I.T. group, he works with many of the Bureau's other groups and members to manage data and provide data-related services. Martin also works as a web developer and programmer to improve the Bureau's website and eliminate legacy applications in favor of newer, less error-prone, web-based systems.
Nagios is a host and service monitor designed to inform you of network problems before your clients, end-users or managers do. It has been designed to run under the Linux operating system, but works fine under most *NIX variants as well. The monitoring daemon runs intermittent checks on hosts and services you specify using external "plugins" which return status information to Nagios. When problems are encountered, the daemon can send notifications out to administrative contacts in a variety of different ways (email, instant message, SMS, etc.). Current status information, historical logs, and reports can all be accessed via a web browser.
