GatorLUG Meeting Agenda for May 21, 2014

6:00 - 6:20 Announcements / General Discussion

6:20 - 7:00 Docker, Packer, and building images | Ben Goldsbury

Docker is one of the fastest growing technology products of 2013/2014. Docker's goal is to provide light-weight, easily manageable virtual environments. Imagine virtualization, but without the need for a hypervisor. This makes it easy to run your application stack on any modern Linux distribution, be it Ubuntu 12.04, 14.04, CentOS 6, or Gentoo. It accomplishes this by shipping small, portable images that can be spun up iterated on quickly.

Packer is a tool for templating and building machine images. You can define how your image should look, using shell code, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Salt. Packer takes your template, and builds your machine on one or more of its many providers, such as VirtualBox, VMWare, OpenStack, and Amazon AWS. We'll go over how both tools work separately, and how they can be used together for beer and profit.

Ben Goldsbury is CTO & Devops Engineer at Spire Business Services.
