GatorJUG - Exploring jclouds with Eric Lavigne

Etc/GMT-5
Description:

This will be a potluck dinner, so please bring a tasty dish and drink if possible. We always have more than enough food for everyone, so please don't worry if you don't have anything to share. We give our leftovers to the homeless next door at the St. Francis House!

We'll meet and talk about jclouds general this meeting. "jclouds is an open source framework that helps you get started in the cloud and reuse your java and clojure development skills. Our api allows you freedom to use portable abstractions or cloud-specific features. We support many clouds including Amazon, VMWare, Azure, and Rackspace.

Here's how we help you get started:

1. Simple interface Instead of creating new object types, we reuse concepts like maps so that the programming model is familiar. In this way, you can get started without dealing with REST-like apis or WS.
2. Runtime portability We have plugins that allow you to operate in restricted environments like Google App Engine and Android.
3. Deal with web complexity Network based computing introduces issues such as transient failures and redirects. We handle this for you.
4. Unit testability Writing tests for cloud endpoints is difficult. We provide you with Stub connections that simulate a cloud without creating network connections. In this way, you can write your unti tests without mocking complexity or the brittleness of remote connections.
5. Performance We have a pluggable engine which gives you more horsepower when you need it. Our high performance engine uses executors and nio to scale efficiently." (from the jclouds website - http://www.jclouds.org/>http://www.jclouds.org/)

Please RSVP at Codetown (.US) so we'll know how much pizza to order. Note: You must join Codetown to enable the RSVP feature on the GatorJUG event. There's a GatorJUG Group on Codetown you'll also want to join. It's called GatorJUG Town

If you'd like to sponsor this (or future) meeting, just let Dan Lackey or Michael Levin know.

Do you like this new format for GatorJUG? We've moved most of the active portions of our original website, www.gatorjug.org to Codetown so you can participate more. It's also easier to maintain using the social network framework. Please ping us with comments. This group's for you! We want it to be the best possible resource it can, so you can realize your software development goals. If you have comments or suggestions, just ping Mike or Dan. And, invite some friends. The more input we have, the better for everyone.
