The Dignity Project needs volunteers who have computer skills to help bridge the digital divide in our local community. Gene Tysowsky will speak about what the Dignity Project is doing and how you can help.
Since its inception in 2003, the Computer Academy has given away more than 700 computer systems to local non-profits, individuals with disabilities, senior citizens and low-income families. The non-profits receiving our computers have allowed us to ‘bridge the digital divide’ for more people in our community and beyond. The volunteers in this program bring their talents in computer repair and instruction to the agency to assist our clients. They also take part in developing computer classes for the After School Program. Our newest computer service is to provide hands-on tutoring to adults in the area that want to learn to use a computer.

7:00 - 7:50 Presentation - The Implications of OpenID | Simon Willison (Video Replay from a Google Presentation)
OpenID is a way for individuals to create identity online and use it anywhere OpenID is supported. OpenID means the elimination of multiple user names and passwords and a smoother, more secure, online experience. For businesses, this means a lower cost of password or account management, the opportunity for easier and higher numbers of new user registrations and the elimination of missed transactions because of user frustration with lost and forgotten passwords.

Mandriva Linux 2008 ONE CD Installfest

Gatorlug is sponsoring a Mandriva 2008 installfest this coming Saturday, 17 November 2007, in Meeting Room "B" of the Main Branch of the Alachua County Public Library. This is also known as the Board of Directors' Meeting Room, and has just recently completed a thorough renovation. I have tried to give this event a lot of publicity, though I failed to act in time to get it into the media. Still, I passed out hundreds of 4" x 6" flyers, and took an 11" x 17" flyer to the library to put up, so hopefully we will have plenty of people show up. We will be there from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM though the doors will be open to the public from 10:00 AM until 4:45 PM to give us time to set up and break down. I will have two computers there with lots of different ISO files and some blank CDs. I will have CDs of Mandriva and the Open CD ready to go, and can burn CDs from Ubuntu, and Mepis (both light and standard versions) and Xandros (30-day trial) and some other stuff. I also have printed up a neat little 8-page booklet Getting Started with Linux (from pixellany.com) with some added info about the LUG. We can serve light refreshment in this room, by the way, so all you good cooks, show up at noon with lunch, cookies, cold drinks, etc! I'm trying to figure out how to add this to the coming events page, but if I fail, Clint, could you do that? I've put a link to this page on the Mandriva Wiki.
