Freedom is contagious.

The spammers have worn me down...

I resisted turning on administrative approval for new accounts until the last spam wave hit. A spammer used an automated script and a bunch of email accounts to create over 50 new junk accounts in about 3 minutes. I knew something was up when Nagios reported a load spike on the box that runs GatorLUG.

It used to be the case that requiring email validation was too much work for spammers. I guess the payoff makes it worthwhile now. Thus, an admin will now have to unblock new accounts before they can be used to post things on the site. My thanks to Barry Simons for installing the advanced user management module. Without that module, it takes a very long time to delete a bunch of junk accounts. With the module it only took a few minutes.

Note to current and would be spammers: The users of a site like this are generally highly intelligent. The probability of them clicking your links and buying stuff from companies that use your services is *really* low. Do yourself a favor and expend your effort on myspace, facebook, etc. Even as a crook, it's in your best interest to use your time more wisely. Being morally bankrupt doesn't mean you also have to be completely stupid.

Sincerely,

An Irritated Admin

That explains all the emails...

That explain all the emails I receive about users being added, changed and whatnot. Cool.

Just blocked host mail.ru

The russian spammers will now need to use a different email host to spam this site now. My apologies to anyone who happens to use mail.ru for legitimate email service. I'm sure there are one or two of you.
