Description:
GatorLUG Meeting Agenda for October 18, 2006
6:00 - 6:15 Announcements
6:15 - 7:00 Presentation | Using R for System Administrators | Allen Rout
R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, ...) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. One of R's strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae
where needed. Great care has been taken over the defaults for the minor design choices in graphics, but the user retains full control. More information is available at http://www.r-project.org/.
Allen will discuss how to use R to collect and analyze information that is useful for system administration tasks.
Allen Rout works for Computing and Networking Services in the Open Systems Group at the University of Florida. He probably moves more data from point A to point B than anyone else at the University as he currently manages the University's central backup infrastructure.
